Full day city tour of the capital with lunch. Amman is a fascinating city of contrasts, a unique blend of old and new, ideally situated on a hilly area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley.  In the commercial heart of the city, ultra-modern buildings, hotels, smart restaurants, art galleries and boutiques rub shoulders comfortably with traditional coffee shops and tiny artisans’ workshops. Everywhere there is evidence of the city’s much older past.  The downtown area is much older and more traditional with smaller businesses producing and selling everything from fabulous jewellery to everyday household items.

Drive to the north to discover Jerash. Jerash lies on a plain surrounded by hilly wooded areas and fertile basins. Conquered by General Pompey in 63 BC, it came under Roman rule and was one of the ten great Roman cities of the Decapolis League. The city's golden age came under Roman rule, during which time it was known as Gerasa, and the site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash reveals a fine example of the grand, formal provincial Roman urbanism that is found throughout the Middle East, comprising paved and colonnaded streets, soaring hilltop temples, handsome theatres, spacious public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and city walls pierced by towers and gates.

Lunch in a restaurant in Jerash.

In the afternoon, relax at Dead Sea. At 410m below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest place on earth. Jordan’s Dead Sea coast is one of the most spectacular natural and spiritual landscapes in the world, and it remains as enticing to international visitors today as it was to kings, emperors, traders, and prophets in antiquity. The main attraction of the Dead Sea is of course the soothing, abnormally salty water itself. The salt content of the water is 31.5% making the water so buoyant that it is impossible for the visitor to sink. The water also contains 21 minerals including high levels of magnesium, sodium, potassium, and bromine and 12 of these minerals are found in no other body of water in the world.

Trip to Madaba.  Best known for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, Madaba is home to the famous 6th century Mosaic Map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With two million pieces of vividly coloured local stone, it depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns as far as the Nile Delta.

Also within the area is Mount Nebo, one of the most revered holy sites of Jordan and the place where Moses was buried. A small Byzantine church was built there by early Christians, which has been expanded into a vast complex. During his visit to Jordan in 2000, the Late Pope John Paul II held a sermon here that was attended by some 20,000 faithful.

Lunch in a Christian family in Madaba.

Drive to the south through the King’s Way. First mentioned by name in the Bible, the Kings' Highway was the route that Moses wished to follow as he led his people north through the land of Edom, which today is in southern Jordan. The name may, however, derive from the even earlier episode recounted in Genesis 14, when an alliance of "four kings from the north" marched their troops along this route to do battle against the five kings of the Cities of the Plain, including the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Stop in Kerak. The fort itself is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and endless passageways. The best-preserved are underground, and to be reached through a massive door (ask at the ticket office). The castle in itself is more imposing than beautiful, though it is all the more impressive as an example of the Crusaders' architectural military genius. Karak's most famous occupant was Reynald de Chatillon, whose reputation for treachery, betrayal and brutality is unsurpassed. The castle was enlarged with a new west wing added by the Ayyubids and Mameluks.

You will reach Petra in the evening.

Full day visiting Petra with lunch. The ancient city of Petra is one of Jordan's national treasures and by far its best known tourist attraction. Located approximately three hours south of Amman, Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site that enchants visitors from all corners of the globe. Much of Petra’s appeal comes from its spectacular setting deep inside a narrow desert gorge. The site is accessed by walking through a kilometre long chasm (or siq), the walls of which soar 200m upwards. Petra’s most famous monument, the Treasury, appears dramatically at the end of the Siq. Used in the final sequence of the film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." the towering façade of the Treasury is only one of myriad archaeological wonders to be explored at Petra. Various walks and climbs reveal literally hundreds of buildings, tombs, baths, funerary halls, temples, arched gateways, colonnaded streets and haunting rock drawings - as well as a 3,000 seat open air theatre, a gigantic 1st century Monastery and a modern archeological museum, all of which can be explored at leisure.

Amaze of monolithic rockscapes rise up from the desert floor to heights of 1,750m creating a natural challenge for serious mountaineers. Hikers can enjoy the tranquility of the boundless empty spaces and explore the canyons and water holes to discover 4000-year-old rock drawings and the many other spectacular treasures this vast wilderness holds in store. Full day visiting Luxor. Among Luxor’s most iconic landmarks are its majestic temples, architectural marvels that reflect the grandeur and opulence of ancient Egyptian civilization.

The Karnak Temple Complex stands as one of the largest religious sites in the world, a sprawling testament to the devotion of generations of pharaohs. Constructed over a period of more than two millennia, Karnak is a labyrinthine ensemble of temples, pylons, and colossal statues dedicated to the worship of the god Amun-Re, the chief deity of the ancient Egyptian pantheon. Visitors are captivated by the sheer scale of the Great Hypostyle Hall, where towering columns adorned with intricate hieroglyphs reach towards the heavens, echoing with the whispers of antiquity.

Adjacent to the banks of the Nile lies Luxor Temple, a symphony of sandstone and granite dedicated to the Theban Triad of gods: Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. Illuminated against the night sky, Luxor Temple takes on an ethereal quality, casting visitors adrift in a sea of timeless beauty. The avenue of sphinxes, once a grand processional route connecting Luxor Temple to Karnak, stands as a silent sentinel, bearing witness to the passage of millennia.

Lunch in a restaurant of Luxor.

In the afternoon, The Enigmatic Valley of the Kings. Venturing westward from Luxor, across the sun-scorched desert, one encounters the Valley of the Kings, a necropolis that served as the final resting place for the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. Carved deep into the limestone cliffs, the tombs of the kings lay concealed for centuries, their treasures safeguarded from the ravages of time and tomb robbers. Among the most renowned is the tomb of Tutankhamun, whose discovery in 1922 by Howard Carter captivated the world and unveiled a trove of priceless artifacts, including the famous golden mask that has become an enduring symbol of ancient Egypt’s splendor.
